Reading Responses

The Neglected "R" Reading Response:

I can understand where this article is going in terms of our society being ill equipped to write proficiently and with content that is substantial. We have been gradually moving in the direction of saying things using the least amount of verbalization. Texting is a prime example.

I like the concept of getting back to just encouraging students to write. They need to know it is ok to write freely and uninhibited by how many pages or words. They need to be taught how to use a first writing as their "shitty first draft" and how to look at it and revise it for a second draft and then again look at that and end up with their final product. Students today are just as capable of creating great writing, they just need to be nutured back to extending their thought processes.

A Modern Profile Of Adult Literacy Reading Response:

This article points out that our students need to know and be aware that they need to learn to write well because no matter what they do in life, good writing and great writing will benefit them. Our students should be given the tools and strategies to accomplish great writing and urged to practice using them to create writings that are fantastic. They need to learn how to write for purposes as well. For example, if I want to open my own business I need to be able to write a business plan. If I am going to apply for a job as a crossing guard in my local school district, I need to be able to write and tell why I would be the right person for that job. I feel like some times our students function as robots these days and lack the personal commitment to what they are trying to write about or express.

trying something new - blogging

OK here I am sitting down blogging. Or at least attempting to blog. I am new to this concept and playing around with it to see how I can utilize this concept in a classroom when I begin teaching. I think I am already starting to see where this could go with the students being free and comfortable to write on their own.

We will see.
